Are you losing points because your engine rebuilder didn't use correct/original GM intake gaskets that have long been GM discontinued? Here's a chance to improve on your underhood cosmetics with a matched used pair of the GM embossed gasket tabs that judges look for.

The front and rear intake manifold gaskets on SB 283/327 engines are similar but differ slightly in shape/geometry. The front gasket had a small "T-shaped" overhang tab on the right front side displaying a raised 'GM' emboss. See the lower gasket tab with it's original Chevy orange overspray...

The rear gasket was shaped to surround the distributor shaft and it too had a GM embossed tab. But, this tab (LH end of the upper gasket) was flat with a longer rectangular shape.  It protruded from the LH side of the rear gasket.

There, the rear apron of the engine block prevents a downward overhang like the 'T-shape' of the front tab. The rear tab is flat allowing it to 'hug' the top of the block's rear apron.

Clean up these used original tabs. Cut and glue them onto your existing service replacement gaskets (consider using black RTV). If your engine has a cast iron intake manifold, these tabs would have caught Chevy orange overspray on the top side. That's why I left the original orange overspray where it was. You may want more or less to match the nearby paint coverage of your engine.

But, if your car has a cast aluminum intake, the gasket tabs were most likely natural or perhaps they picked up some aluminum/silver detail color on the engine assy line. In this case, you'll want to remove the existing orange overspray using a spritz of paint remover. With these tabs on, your mechanical judges should smile!

Akio Toyoda waves family flag, heir makes crisis personal challenge

Wed, 24 Feb 2010

The reclusive Akio Toyoda is taking the rare step of waving the family flag, as the scion to Toyota Motor Corp.’s founding dynasty tries to steer the world’s largest car company out of a spiraling safety crisis. In testimony prepared for the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, President Toyoda pursues a rare personal tack on the emergency, saying “my name is on every car.” “As you well know, I am the grandson of the founder, and all the Toyota vehicles bear my name,” Toyoda says in prepared comments circulated ahead of Wednesday’s committee hearing in Washington. “For me, when the cars are damaged, it is as though I am as well.” The intimate reflection is a departure for Toyoda, who has spent most of his career sidestepping public discussion of his lineage.
