Five-Door Mini Hatch Is Go

BMW HAS announced that production of the long awaited five-door Mini Hatch has started, signaling the next phase in the car maker’s £750 million investment programme across its UK production facilities from 2011 to 2015. The car comes hot on the heels of the new Mini Hatch, which was launched in November. The new five-door version will go on sale in the autumn.

While the Mini Countryman might be destined for suburban mumsville, BMW has confirmed the new model will also terrorise the countryside in the form of the WRC Mini from 2011, with IRC champ Kris Meeke at the wheel. Officially launched at the 2010 Paris motor show in concept guise, the WRC Mini will be engineered and run by motorsport doyen Dave Richards and his Prodrive outfit, although customer packages will be available too, allowing independents to compete in the car. Aston Martin has gone back to its spiritual home to create a classic car showroom at Newport Pagnell, and has spent the last two years developing the old Olympia building to house their Classic Car offerings. The Olympia building, itself 100 years old and once an integral part of AML’s Newport Pagnell operations, has been fully refurbished and decorated in period style with not just lots of glorious classic Astons (and Lagondas) but displays of memorabilia from the factory heritage collection.
