Fiat and Chrysler get in to bed together

Before Christmas the CEO of Fiat was reported as saying that he believed that the current malaise in the car market (and any other market, for that matter) would result in the rationalisation of the industry, and see just a handful of big players come out the other side. His words now seem prescient, as it has been announced today that Fiat and Chrysler have effectively entered in to a partnership. China to boost electric cars with 30% Government EV fleet

The BYD E6 EV (pictured) will benefit from China’s push on EVs The UK government has just announced its commitment to use electric cars for its own vehicles in an effort to boost the take-up of EVs, but China is going even further. China has ordered government officials to start buying electric cars (that means BEVs, plug-in hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell cars) in a big way, with instructions that 30 per cent of government cars must fall in to the ‘New Energy’ category by 2017, and an even higher percentage going forward. The aim is to cut pollution, and China expects to have 5 million New Energy cars on the road by 2020 and it is urging it government agencies and some city governments to start buying New Energy vehicles from Chinese makers like BYD and SDAIC, but also instructing them to build more charging stations and supporting infrastructure.

60% of drivers say no to more cyclist protection – survey

A MAJORITY of drivers believe that they should not change the way they drive despite a series of cyclist deaths on the roads of the capital, according to a survey carried out by Motorpoint. Over 1,700 respondents answered the poll on the vehicle retailer’s website, with 60.5% of those declaring that their driving standards did not need to be improved in order to better protect cyclists. The Government’s response was to launch Operation Safeway, which included officers stationed a busy and dangerous junctions in London and an increase in on the spot fines for poor behaviour by drivers and riders alike.
