For new CAFE rules, automakers place high-stakes tech bets

Tue, 23 Mar 2010

Game-changing 2015 fuel economy rules are forcing vehicle development teams to make high-stakes bets on expensive technologies--bets that will separate the winners from the also-rans. Not only do federal rules target a 2015 fleet average of 35.5 mpg, up from the current 27.5 mpg for cars and 23.1 mpg for light trucks; they force automakers to bet on different technology packages for each vehicle segment. McLaren SLR Stirling Moss – the Video

Mercedes McLaren SLR Stirling Moss Featuring the same underpinnings as the McLaren SLR 722, it develops 650bhp and manages 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 217 mph. Which should be enough to dislodge the toupee of those who can afford to buy it. McLaren are only producing 75 SLR Stirling Moss, so perhaps it’s no real surprise that we’ve seen so little about the SLR since it launched.

Citroen started to design cool cars again when it penned the C4, but it’s been the recent C3 Picasso that has really captured the automotive industry’s attention.
