Williams F1 sells Williams Hybrid Power to GKN for £8 million

Mon, 07 Apr 2014

GKN have bought williams Hybrid Power in an £8 deal Back in 2010 we reported on a flywheel developed by Williams F1 that recoups energy from braking, and was fitted to a Porsche 911 GT3 to give an extra boost of power. Williams F1 developed the Flywheel technology with a start-up company, which it bought out for £1.5 million in 2010, and now that company – which became Williams Hybrid Power – has been sold to GKN in a deal worth £8 million – and a share of sales revenue going forward – and is being renamed GKN Hybrid Power. The plan is to use the flywheel technology to reduce fuel consumption of transport that is constantly stopping and starting – it’s currently being used on a bus operating in London – and  Williams expect it could cut fuel use by up to 30 per cent.

CES: GM to open the dashboard to developers

Tue, 08 Jan 2013

At last year's Autoweek Design Forum, father of the iPod and Nest Labs co-founder Tony Fadell suggested that automakers concentrate on designing and building cars, leaving handset makers to handle infotainment. The latest announcements from Ford and GM -- in conjunction with the International CES -- suggest that automakers would rather treat the dashboard space as a handset. Yesterday, Dearborn, Mich., announced the Ford Developer Program, which opens up Sync to outside application development; now General Motors has announced a similar initiative.

New Kia Carens gets new range-topper – the Carens 3 Sat Nav

Tue, 01 Oct 2013

New Kia Carens gets new range-topper – the Carens 3 Sat Nav But it seems Kia’s customers are shouting out for something that offers more standard equipment than the regular, not very inventive, trim levels of 1, 2 and 3, so Kia has decided to add a fourth option – the Kia Carens 3 Sat Nav to the range. The Carens 3 already comes with a decent enough spec – including panoramic roof, 17″ alloys, leather, heated seats, second row sun blinds and colour reversing camera – but the 3 Sat Nav adds a 7″ touchscreen SatNav and new audio system with 8-channel amp and sub woofer offering a better sound experience for all occupants. The Carens 3 Sat Nav is only available with Kia’s 134bhp 1.7 litre CRDI with 6-speed manual ‘box and costs from £24,845.
