It's been almost 21 years to the day that Autoweek printed Matt DeLorenzo's column “Off the Line: There's room for fast, fun cars in diet of social responsibility.” And in those two decades plus, not much has changed except the vehicles themselves. For example, sports cars like the Bugatti Veyron and Pagani Huayra have astronomically high performance and safety levels; similarly, sport-utility vehicles that haul entire families (and most of their earthly possessions) achieve fuel economy similar to that of 1970s midsize sedans. Gordon Murray Teewave AR.1

Gordon Murray Designs has announced the latest addition to its range of electric vehicles in the form of a two-seat sports car. Following on from the diminutive T.25 city car, the Teewave AR.1 is an all-electric roadster that features a carbon monocoque chassis, designed in such a way that it can be applied to a variety of vehicle types. The AR.1 sports car was designed in close collaboration with Toray Industries, a Japanese carbon fiber specialist.

Driverless cars on UK pavements by 2015

REX Driverless cars are starting to look less and less like science fiction and much more like a realistic vision of our near future – and now the first UK trial of the technology is set to start in Milton Keynes in 2015. But don’t go expecting a Ford Fiesta with a brain. Instead the Milton Keynes experiment will feature compact pods that you can hail via a smartphone app, zipping along pavements at up to 12mph.
