After showing sketches last week, it has unveiled an in-the-metal version of the 496bhp machine to VW devotees at the annual GTI-fest at Worthersee, Austria. It hasn’t – this is VW’s virtual competitor in Sony’s Gran Turismo 6, joining the likes of the Toyota FT-1, shown at the Detroit motor show, and the BMW Vision Gran Turismo.

But if MG are to succeed they really need to use some of the heritage of MG to grab buyers attention. That probably means a credible hot hatch rather than a traditional MG Roadster, so the arrival of the MG3 Trophy Championship Concept at MG’s 90th birthday celebrations at the weekend is perhaps a good pointer of the sort of direction we could see from MG in the coming years.

Spyker signs deal with China's Hawtai Motor to raise funds for Saab

Saab owner Spyker Cars on Tuesday said it has signed an agreement with China's Hawtai Motor Group to form joint ventures for manufacturing, technology and distribution. The agreement will also provide $222 million (150 million euros) funding for Saab, which has been forced to halt production because it cannot pay suppliers' bills. Victor Muller, Spyker CEO and Saab chairman, said the partnership will allow Saab to enter the Chinese car market with a strong Chinese manufacturer.
