1/2 VW Engine Plans

Looking for a way to mount a 4-stroke engine to your ultralight or light aircraft? The economic solution is to take a full-case Volkswagon engine and modify it from four cylinders to using only the front two! There are various plans available from different sources for converting a full VW engine to a 1/2 VW engine, but they all, including our plans, specify removing the rear 2 cylinders, cutting the crankshaft and cam, and cutting the cylinder heads.  There are then a multitude of various other modifications needed to seal up new openings created during the conversion and keep the engine leak free. Our new plans  include 14 pages of written instructions with additional pages of figures and drawings. There are even full scale templates for making the proper parts. The detailed plans and drawings which take you all the way through the conversion process to actually starting and running your creation. The plans come spiral bound in an easy to understand format.

Keep in mind that our plans call for using the entire case as this is the easier method and in many ways the preferred method for conversion. They do NOT specify how to do the cut-case type conversation.

So why should you build a 1/2 VW Engine? Here are few good reasons:

  • Parts are low cost and available via the internet or sometimes can be purchased in your home town.
  • The engine is relatively lightweight. There is no expensive or heavy reduction drive or exhaust system to mount. Most of the time the crankcase is made of magnesium which is 33% lighter than comparable aluminum. If you build it well your engine will weigh 85-90 lbs. Engine HP can be from 28-37 hp depending on the internal parts used.
  • The cylinders are aircooled, though truth be told most of the cooling comes from the oil. This means you don’t have to worry about a heavy or complex liquid cooling system.

Mini Cooper (2013) New Mini previewed by Mini Vision Concept

Fri, 26 Jul 2013

The Mini Vision Concept has given the best indication yet at what the Mini 3, due to be shown this autumn, will look like. Shown at a design event in Germany, the Vision, says Mini, is intended to show the future design direction of the BMW sub-brand, but when compared to scoop images of the car, essentially previews the new model in all its glory. Mini Vision Concept: the need-to-know The Mini 3 will keep the familiar styling cues of the first two generations, but there’s a longer wheelbase and a waistline that’s rising more sharply towards the roofline, which lowers more aggressively than before.

BMW 3 Series GT Spied

Fri, 25 Mar 2011

2012 BMW 3-Series GT caught being transported I can’t say we’ve really laid awake at night thinking about it, but the reveal of the BMW 3 Series GT must be getting close. As, for that matter, must the whole new 2012 BMW 3-Series. We first reported that BMW were making a 3-Series GT back in 2009, but we did know they wouldn’t be building one on the current platform, waiting instead for when the new 3-Series due to put in an appearance, probably at Frankfurt in the Autumn (if not before).

Ford justifies its Vignale sub-brand (video)

Tue, 24 Sep 2013

The Ford Mondeo Vignale (pictured). Ford’s first Vignale-badged car Earlier this month, as the Frankfurt Motor Show approached, Ford revealed that it’s going back to a sales tactic they created in the 1970s – badge-engineering their cars with a coachbuilders name to create an upmarket sub-brand. Last time Ford played this game we had almost 30 years for the Ford Ghia, a range of Ford’s mainstream models that had all the toys as standard to try and create an appealing high-end option for buyers.
