One of a kind?

Double rear-view mirror/clock combination. Earliest day/night rear-view mirror?

This two-mirror combination came off of a Pierce Arrow motorcar, some time in the '30s. It has stayed with the same family since that time. Unfortunately, the car has not.

Presumably, one would align both mirrors for a view through the rear window. As night fell and following cars' headlights became distracting, one would just angle the day mirror so it was no longer shining in your eyes, leaving just the night (dark) mirror.

The day mirror is in very good shape and is tinted a beautiful gold; the night mirror is just "good" and has a darker tint. The clock is made by Standard Mirror Company of Buffalo, New York. It looks good, but does not run. Perhaps it has been wound too tight. The time can be set using the stem, however, and it feels smooth.

There is a bit of paper stuck in the mounting (see picture). My guess is that it came with the clock (watch?) and was tucked in there for future reference.

Remember this twin-engine, AWD, home-brew Scirocco?

Obviously, the big problem with the VW Scirocco is that its rear wheels aren't driven. Around a decade ago, a guy named Anson decided to solve that problem by shoving a second VW motor in the rear end of his Scirocco. Sure, VW had done it before, but this enterprising do-it-yourselfer spent just $1,800 on the build.

Enzo Ferrari died 25 years ago today

The word “Ferrari” is evocative enough as it is, but add “Enzo-era” to the mix and we imagine a very specific type of machine -- a vehicle that is raw, passionate, perhaps a bit prickly, but above all, utterly unique and irreplaceable. There's a reason Enzo-era Ferraris are magical: Enzo Ferrari himself. Born in 1898, Ferrari joined the Alfa Romeo racing team in 1920, established Scuderia Ferrari in 1929 and put his name on a V12-powered race car in 1947.
