Loved as it may be by its loyal fanbase, the outgoing Z4 was always something of a mixed bag in terms of design. While the car's classic long-bonnet, cab-back profile and short overhangs should have pleased the eye, the BMW's sheer frontal mass made its proportions seem out of balance. The most obvious visual change is the adoption of the Aston Martin grill that now adorns the nose of Ford’s latest models, and that is enhanced with a new front bumper, re-profiled bonnet, slimmer headlight and a tweak to the tailgate with new lights too. Inside, the new Focus loses many of the buttons that are scattered around the current model to be replaced by controls run through the touchscreen, a new steering wheel, thicker carpets and thicker glass for better sound insulation, new sliding integrated arm rest, satin black trim and chrome detailing and the arrival of Ford’s connected SYNC 2.

Middlecott Sketchbattle Experiment contest pits auto designers against Detroit talent

Local creative and design talent from outside and inside the car industry will go head-to-head in a multi-round competition for the title of Sketchmaster in the Middlecott Sketchbattle Experiment (MSBE). To be held at an underground afterparty for the Auto Show Charity Preview on 17 January at the Kunsthalle Museum in Detroit, the self-styled car design fight club will be attended by industry leaders, designers from Ford, GM, Chrysler, Toyota and Tier One suppliers. Car enthusiasts, artists and designers from around the globe will also be present.
