The 12 volt Tung-Sol 5440 and 5400 7" headlamps were first used in cars and trucks in 1953.  Produced from 1953 to 1959, the 5440 heavy duty version for sale here was eventually replaced by the 6013.  They were advertised variously as "rough service", "heavy duty", "truck and bus", and "long-life" and have a beefed-up, reinforced filament that 5400 bulbs did not.  Also consider this as a possible alternative to the very-hard-to-find 5400.

I only have one.

This headlamp, dated July, 1956, does not have the three aimer buttons (also known as "aiming points", "aiming platforms", "nubbins", and "gizmoes") which were introduced by the industry in 1955 and which became almost universal by 1956.  I have been told that Ford continued to use headlamps without aimers after that.

CAR Most Wanted of 2014: Land Rover Freelander

Thu, 19 Dec 2013

By Ollie Kew First Official Pictures 19 December 2013 12:50 Settle down, Range Rover, and your Sport and Evoque cousins. It’s now Land Rover’s turn for a high-tech new 4x4 family, and it kicks off with the new Land Rover Freelander. Except, as CAR reported earlier in 2013, the Freelander replacement will bin that name – and, hopes Land Rover, the moniker’s poor reliability connotations.

Porsche Cayenne S Diesel: The V8 diesel Cayenne arrives

Wed, 12 Sep 2012

Porsche has revealed the 2013 Cayenne S Diesel with a 4.2 litre V8 diesel offering 378bhp, 626lb/ft of torque and 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds. Back in April we reported that the Porsche Cayenne S Diesel was on its way with a V8 diesel engine to take on the BMW M50d and the upcoming offerings from Land Rover with a 2014 4.4 litre Range Rover Sport seeming a likely possibility. Now Porsche has caught up and revealed the Cayenne S diesel, which gets the 4.2 litre diesel V8 with a healthy 378bhp and a very useful 626lb/ft of torque, enough to scoot the Cayenne S Diesel to 62mph in 5.7 seconds – a bit slower than the M50d, but all that torque should make it feel at least as lively.

2012 Suzuki Splash launches

Thu, 05 Jul 2012

The Suzuki Splash gets a bit of a facelift for 2012 with tweaks to the bumpers, grill and interior trim. If you’re looking for something to potter around the urban landscape – and need a bit more room than the normal city car – the new Suzuki Splash may be right up your street. With its upright driving position and extra room compared to the usual city box, the Swift does a decent job of ferrying families round cities.
