1958 Lotus 15 sports racer
Wobbly Web 13" Cast Magnesium Wheel
VRRA SVRA
This spare wheel and tyre came from a Lotus 15 sports racer!
With Original Dunlop Racing Green Dot Tyre! Tyre marked 5.50 L-13 CR-48. This tyre predates speed ratings. It was just rated "G" Good for all racing applications! Can't believe we were actually racing at 145 to 150 MPH on these skinny hard tyres! This Tyre is over forty years old, so is good only for static museum display purposes.
Back in my ancient history, I was a Lotus race car mechanic supporting a 23B sports racer. One race outing, a lovely 1958 Lotus 15 sports racer shared our paddock at RiverSide! After a beautiful weekend and a successful race, the Lotus 15 departed without its spare tyre! All attempts to contact the owner failed. I carried this wheel with me to every race for the next decade. Hoping to come across the owner.
The Lotus 15 sports racer designed in 1958 was the first privately owned Club Racer available for sale with either 13" or 15" cast magnesium "wobbly web" wheels and the then new Dunlop Green Dot 5.50" Racing Tyres direct from the factory. These wheels/tyres were previously only available to the works team!
These same cast magnesium "wobbly web" wheels were used with both the bolt-on hub and with the pin drive Cone hub with Knock Off center spinner. Conical nuts were used with studs on the bolt-on hub configuration.
Wheel center painted Yellow lacquer with major flaking. Paint should be stripped to repair. Magnesium corrosion is evident on the back side of the wheel and around the rim. White powder in the pictures. No major deep pitting! Wheel could use a good cleaning with soda blasting to neutralize the magnesium corrosion. New paint and a clear coat should make it good as new.

The Lotus"wobbly web" cast magnesium wheel has an interesting history. Colin Chapman had contracted with arch-rival John Cooper to provide Lotus with cast mag wheels, as they had the best supply. Well the workers at Cooper were not thrilled to supply their enemy. So they shipped Lotus every bent, broken and deformed cast wheel available( over 200). Chapman immediately recognized that this catalog of failures pointed to an engineered weakness around the hub. Cooper had modified their hub design by adding material and weight around the hub. Failure of these later designs showed it to be not entirely successful. Chapman correctly analyzed that using form stiffness he could design a stronger and much lighter wheel. The result was the distinctive wobbly web form of the Lotus cast magnesium wheels.
