Where's the key???

When a customer developed a problem with a lock in their car, GM's intention was for the dealership to fix the problem so that the lock would work just as it was when the car was new. So, when the dealership ordered the parts to fix the problem, they were expected to only order the broken part. Next, the dealership was supposed to re-key a new cylinder with new tumblers so that it matched the customer's existing key. GM didn't want the customer to end up with different keys for each door lock, or a different key for the glove box lock than the trunk lock, when they're supposed to have only one key to fit both locks. And that's just exactly why you don't normally find keys when you find NOS GM lock parts. There are a few exceptions to this rule, but, for the most part, GM did not supply any keys with any lock parts. Also, that's why you find lock cylinders separate from the lock casings quite often. All in the name of supplying what was broken only, to make it as new.

When I sell parts on eBay, mostly what I sell is leftovers obtained from a dealership. When you wind up with leftovers, you seldom receive matched sets, pairs, or complete assemblies of any kind of part, since the dealership only ordered what was broken. The only exception is when GM packaged things as an assembly, or pairs, and the dealership was forced into buying more than they needed. That would be why I am usually able to offer only one piece like this (for one location on the car only). If a lock cylinder winds up being a leftover 20-30-40 years later (say, if the customer never picked it up, or the dealership ordered it wrong), there is almost no chance that I will be finding the lock case that the cylinder fits in, since the dealership undoubtedly ordered the lock cylinder only. Or they ordered both parts, but found out that the cylinder was still good, and they only needed to use the lock case, but never managed to return the cylinder to GM for refund for some unknown reason. Again, if GM only offered it as an assembly, that's usually how I have it.

Now, in the rare case where I am able to find all parts of an assembly or all of a set (if packaged separately by GM), sometimes obtained at different times from different dealerships, I usually try to put them on eBay together, since completeness usually equals a higher sale price for me. While a higher price for you is not as good, it helps me stay in business. This is why I do not understand people who will turn down one part of a set when they find it on eBay, preferring to wait for a complete set. There's probably a 75% chance a complete set will never turn up on eBay or anywhere, and the set will have to be accumulated piece-meal. Isn't that part of the fun of the chase? Not to mention that most often, the separate pieces can be bought cheaper than the complete assembly.

Volkswagen Microbus production could resume in Brazil

Thu, 02 Jan 2014

The Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi/Microbus may be a classic to our eyes, but it has been in continuous production in Brazil for almost 50 years. Impending legislation that would outlaw the production and importation of cars and trucks without modern safety features such as ABS brakes and airbags was set to put an end to the Kombi production in Brazil, but one lawmaker wants to make an exception for the veteran vehicle, Indian Autos Blog reports. Brazil's finance minister Guido Mantega is arguing that since the Kombi/Microbus has been in production for decades -- before ABS technology and airbags were developed -- it would be unfair to apply the new law to the vehicle.
