Up for sale is a rare 1963 Ford "Q Code" 427 Engine. It is a Top Oiler.

This was a true barn find that sat for many years in a rural Pennsylvania barn, not far from the famous Maple Grove Raceway. The story behind this is that it was purchased by a racer who wanted to use it as a replacement engine after he blew up his 1968 Cobra Jet 428 sometime around 1970. He never got around to putting it in the Mustang, which was sold in 1973 (sorry, I tried to get info on the car, but it's long gone). The engine sat on a stand in the barn for over 40 years until the racer passed away and his estate put it up for sale. I purchased it in October and took it to a machine shop to get it checked, cleaned and ready for sale.

I'll give you the whole rundown so you know the story before purchasing.

The Bad:

Crank (C4AE-B) - The crank seems to be of 1964 vintage and had already been turned -.030. It was magnafluxed and my machinist discovered cracks on #2 & #3 rod throw and on #3 Main. Crank is usable, but will need repair.
Heads - (C3AE 6090-H) - Both head have 2 small cracks from Head bolt holes to exterior (exhaust side). The good news is that these can be used without repair as cracks are not in a critical area. Please see yellow grease pencil marks in photos. These are low-rise, big valve heads.
Missing - Carb, Valve Covers, Exhaust Manifolds and Distributor

The Good:

The Block (C3AE 6015-AB) - Block was magnafluxed and is in great condition. It is standard bore - never been overbored.
Rods (C3AE-C) - Rods are original, free of defects and have been shot peened. They are just like new. They are bushed for floating pistons and have "football" rod bolts.
Intake Manifold (C3AE 9424-E) - The intake is just like new. It was degreased and glass bead blasted to perfect condition.
Oil Pan - Very Good, has the windage baffle still intact.
Rocker Arms - Adjustable For Solid Cam, Have been reconditioned, shafts were replaced. Perfect.

I also have the camshaft, push rods, timing cover, water neck, breather tube, water pump, balacer, pulleys and brackets, and original hardware including the cross-bolts for the mains. (see photos)

I have spent over $1000 on the machine work, so please, no low-ball offers. They only made a handful of these, so I'd rather keep it than give it away.

First Sight: Mini

Mon, 14 Aug 2006

The first 'New' Mini was launched just five years ago, replacing the original Mini that had changed only in detail since its 1959 debut. Designed by Frank Stephenson, now head of design at Fiat, the current design has been a sales success and most significantly has been very influential in demonstrating how small cars need not be explicitly functionalist, smaller versions of larger car types or feel cheap. The new 'New' Mini, designed under the direction of Gert Hildebrand at Mini, is announced today with exterior design by Marcus Syring, interior design by Marc Girard and colour and trim design by Annette Baumeister.
