McLaren P1′s Pirelli P Zero Corsas key to performance +video

Sat, 09 Mar 2013

The new McLaren P1 is shod with custom-made Pirelli P Zero Corsa Tyres specially developed to meet the challenges of a 903bhp supercar. Ron Dennis has already told us that he has driven the P1 round the Top Gear test track at Dunsfold a full 10 seconds quicker than the Pagani Huayra went round, so we know the P1 has huge abilities on tap. But what’s also interesting is that Ron did his Top Gear lap on the P1′s road tyres, specially developed for McLaren by Pirelli, and not on hand-cut slicks like the Pagani Huayra.

Tomorrow’s world: Fiat's MultiAir engine tech

Wed, 14 Oct 2009

By Jesse Crosse Motor Industry 14 October 2009 16:50 Fiat this year launches what it claims is a big step forward in variable valve timing: MultiAir. It's the first time that a manufacturer has made a properly variable valve system a production reality, and will slowly be rolled out across most of Fiat's and Alfa's car ranges. How does Fiat's MultiAir vary from existing variable valve timing (VVT) systems?Current VVT systems rely on mechanical systems to open and close the valves. Engineers have long understood the benefits of changing valve opening and closing times to tweak an engine's power and emissions performance, depending on the need for power or parsimony.Valves are an engine's nose and mouth – it inhales through inlet valves and exhales through exhaust valves.

Range Rover Hybrid on the Silk Trail

Sat, 31 Aug 2013

A trio of Range Rover Hybrid s (pictured) on the Silk Trail The new Range Rover Hybrid (and the Range Rover Sport Hybrid too) are heading for a reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show in a week or so, but they’re not quite ready for showrooms yet. Land Rover are still busy doing the final shakedown of the hybrid powerplant and have decided the best way is a high profile jaunt from Land Rover in Solihull to Mumbai in India following the ancient Silk Trail route to test the robustness of their new hybrid. So they garnered a trio of Range Rover hybrids – and support vehicles – enlisted a team consisting of Land Rover development engineers and motoring media from 10 countries, and set off from Solihull on 22nd August on the almost 10,000 mile expedition.
