Screaming Fords at Kirkland Concours d'Elegance
Fri, 15 Oct 2010Compared with its high-tech-center neighbors--Bellevue and Redmond--the town of Kirkland, Wash., is relatively unknown. But Kirkland is where the vibrant car-collector scene in the area is shown at its best each fall at the Kirkland Concours d'Elegance. And while you may not have heard of Kirkland, you've probably heard of its famous Pacific Northwest weather--not the best, you'd think, for outdoor car shows.
Gorden Wagener on how Mercedes is "moving from a traditional luxury brand to a modern luxury brand"
Thu, 28 Aug 2014Mercedes' 'home' design studio in Sindelfingen, Germany is housed in an expansive 30,000-square meter building designed by Renzo Piano. The lobby is unassuming, but we're soon through into what Mercedes' grandly calls 'the Vision Room.' It's here that strategic meetings are held with the firm's board, and where we meet Gorden Wagener, Mercedes' head of design since 2008. It's in the Vision Room that Wagener convinced the Mercedes board of the merits of his overarching design philosophy: 'sensual purity'.
Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4: The Commercial
Mon, 25 Apr 2011Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 takes on the landscape There was a time in the dim and distant past (well, the 1980s) when advertising cars was easy – you just made them look as dramatic as possible and hoped viewers would think that buying the car being advertised would imbue them with endless cool. But then the world was made to feel guilt by a new religion which was even better than the Catholic Church at making its followers feel bad for anything in life that feels good – the ‘Global Warming’ believers. These descendants of the ‘Hole in the Ozone Layer’ brigade and the ‘New Ice Age’ predictors’ have managed to frighten a big chunk of the West’s population in to believing they are somehow to blame for our climate change, and in doing so have terrified car makers in to making anything other than fluffy-bunny adverts.
