General Motors' small Cadillac will take aim at the BMW 3-series

The new Cadillac model that General Motors announced today will be aimed at the smaller models produced by BMW, Mercedes-Benz and other luxury brands. The rear-drive Cadillac is expected to be called the ATS and to arrive in showrooms in 2012 or early 2013, according to industry sources. “We will have a car positioned below the CTS in our lineup to compete with the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C class.,” said Nick Twork, a Cadillac spokesman, during a telephone interview.

The second-generation BMW X1, expected here in early 2016, is smaller and lighter than the existing first-generation model. The new X1 loses optional six-cylinder power; a new high-output four-cylinder replaces it. Volkswagen has tweaked the CrossBlue Coupe Concept for the 2013 LA Auto Show after its appearance at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show. The concept car itself is based on the CrossBlue three-row crossover concept that we saw at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, and given Volkswagen's persistence with the concept and its favorable reception it seems like it may be headed for production in the not too distant future. Even though it appeared as a seven-seat crossover concept in Detroit, Volkswagen has apparently reconsidered the vehicle's size, and decided to target crossovers one size smaller in this iteration of the CrossBlue.
