Better Place EV Battery Swap business goes bust
Tue, 28 May 2013It seemed like a good idea: take the cost of batteries out of the cost of buying an electric car and instead charge EV owners to use ‘Battery Swap’ stations where depleted batteries could be swapped for fully charged ones in the time it takes to fill an ICE car with petrol. But it’s all gone a bit Pete Tong. Better Place – which partnered with Renault in 2009 to make the battery swap technology viable – has failed to find anyone to add to the $750 million already involved in the project and has filed for bankruptcy.
Fiat 500 Coupe Zagato gets green light
Sat, 12 Mar 2011Fiat 500 Coupe Zagato to go in to production When we counted up the number of cars that appeared at the Geneva Motor Show this year it came to over 200. But one we did miss was this rather appealing Concept Fiat 500 – the Fiat 500 Coupe Zagato – which is not just a Zagato take on the 500 but an entirely new Fiat 500 shape – the 500 Coupe.
Ford Focus 1.0-litre EcoBoost sets 16 world speed records
Fri, 01 Jun 2012The new Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost has set 16 world speed records in two days of testing at the CERAM test circuit in Mortefontaine. Who’d have thought that a little 3-cylinder engine in a Ford Focus could ever be an appealing prospect? But it’s become very clear that Ford’s little boosted 3-pot is quite the star and, for almost anyone who does a normal mileage, by far the choice over a diesel-engined Focus.
