on the market you will find either ECUs sold singly or sold as ECU & transponder kits with key.
If you find the full set of the ECU componants (must be corresponding part numbers to your original and matched to correct transceiver transponder & key chip) you will be able to fully replace with your full existing set without any further programming of the ECU.
however they are not always readily available or cost effective.
If you buy an ECU alone for a modern vehicle, it is usually transferrable to your model provided part numbers match.
Though it will require programming / coding to match your vehicle’s specific security and immobilizer system. This typically costs around 100-150 as a rough guide (though prices can vary) with an auto electrician using the correct software or main dealer.
There are usually a series of part numbers on any ECU, typically the manufacture part number for ( BOSCH, Siemens, Magneti Marelli, delco, ford etc) & the specific vehicle manufacturers part number. you will need to match these numbers to ensure you are buying the correct ecu for your specific vehicle.
Earlier ECUs are often uncoded and may simply be exchanged without further programming and will be fully operational as they are not coded to the car’s security system. however, you should still ensure that the replacement part numbers fully match your original.

The new site will merge the capabilities of two existing Ford colleges – the Technical Training Centre located separately at Daventry, and the Henry Ford College in Loughborough, which provides training for technicians, sales staff and management throughout Ford’s national dealer network. Scheduled to open next year, the brand-new centre will replace the existing facilities to become a centre of excellence for training across the country.
