Concept Car of the Week: Honda Kiwami (2003)Fri, 11 Apr 2014As part of Honda's exploration into new, clean-performing technologies, the Kiwami concept was created to test public acceptance of the idea of a large, fuel cell-powered luxury sedan. Unveiled in 2003, the simple yet striking design seemed like a Japanese twist on the Renault Vel Satis concept, which shared a similar wedge profile, wide stance and minimalist approach. However, the Kiwami found its own interpretation of modern luxury, expressed through elegantly integrated technology rather than with crystal champagne glasses. Up front, a full-width LED strip headlamp sat flush with the flat bonnet and the rectangular bumper to create a design of primitive beauty. Further examples of the same simple Japanese aesthetic are found around the car, including the uncluttered body panels and a full-width tail-lamp graphic that matched the front theme. The dramatic proportions of the interior were closely related to the package of the hydrogen power plant. Unlike other manufacturers at the time, Honda engineers did not create a 'skateboard' fuel cell chassis below the cabin. Instead, a sideways H-shaped layout for the control unit, ultracapacitor, fuel cell stack, hydrogen storage and other components was used, helping to create a lower center of gravity. McLaren F1 Video: Flemke’s Mac’s been fixedFri, 14 Oct 2011Flemke's McLaren F1 on video Perhaps the best-know McLaren F1 in the UK – well, perhaps the best known apart from Rowan Atkinson’s recently bent F1 – is the F1 owned by regular online commenter ‘Flemke’. Flemke is, as you would expect, worth a few bob and lives in the UK. But unlike the vast majority of McLaren F1 owners he loves to share the joy of his Mac with online enthusiasts. Andy Saunders sells 'Art Cars' collectionTue, 04 Nov 2008British 'car artist' Andy Saunders' 'Art Car' collection was sold by RM Auctions in London, UK on October 29, along with a selection of classic cars and a McLaren F1 that sold for £2.5 million - a new world record. Though lacking the quality of many Californian custom cars when seen close up, the Art Cars were fascinating to see, and unlike other custom car creators, Saunders has made almost all of the cars for himself; conceiving and creating the cars without any design process beyond thinking them through and getting his hands dirty in evenings after work. Each of the cars introduced new themes not evident in their donor designs and, within the context of many salubrious but established classic car designs at the auction, they had a powerful quixotic appeal. So why is he selling them? 2040Parts.com © 2012-2024. All Rights Reserved. Designated trademarks and brands are the property of their respective owners.
