The BMW i3 electric city car (pictured) has been officially revealed The BMW i3 – the first of BMW’s production ‘i’ electric cars – has finally been revealed at events in London, New York and Beijing as BMW plots its course to bring a premium electric city car to the world. Looking much like the original Mega City Concept, the i3 debuts a number of innovations from BMW – which are very clever – but it also debuts perhaps the worst looking BMW we’ve ever seen, with its incongruous lines, bulging bonnet, odd shapes on the flanks and slab-backed rear view. But what underpins the i3 is clever indeed, with a lightweight inner body made from carbon fibre and carbon fibre reinforced body panels providing the skin, all conspiring to make the i3 light – 1195kg, despite 25 per cent or so of that being batteries – and very rigid.

TAKE ONE Skoda Citigo, chop its roof off, install some neon lighting under the chassis and you get the Skoda apprentices’ dream car, apparently. The CitiJet is the madcap brainchild of 16 budding Skoda designers, who were tasked with creating their ideal car out of an existing Skoda model. Effectively, a Citigo Sport has been turned into an open-top city slicker, but don’t ask how the roof closes because there isn’t one.

Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 takes on the landscape There was a time in the dim and distant past (well, the 1980s) when advertising cars was easy – you just made them look as dramatic as possible and hoped viewers would think that buying the car being advertised would imbue them with endless cool. But then the world was made to feel guilt by a new religion which was even better than the Catholic Church at making its followers feel bad for anything in life that feels good – the ‘Global Warming’ believers. These descendants of the ‘Hole in the Ozone Layer’ brigade and the ‘New Ice Age’ predictors’ have managed to frighten a big chunk of the West’s population in to believing they are somehow to blame for our climate change, and in doing so have terrified car makers in to making anything other than fluffy-bunny adverts.
