Video: Jaguar's Julian Thomson on the importance of design values
Tue, 30 Oct 2012Jaguar's Head of Advanced Design, Julian Thomson, appeared at this month's PSFK Conference in London giving a talk on design values. Thomson's talk, ‘Concepting Dreams, Making Reality Happen', dealt with questions of creating a design story as well as how Jaguar uses the value of its heritage while keeping things original and new. Thomson – the man behind the 2010 C-X75 and the recently revealed F-Type – said, "You can't get a good design story if you don't look at your heritage, where you came from, where your values came from." He went on to discuss the ‘sad years of Jaguar', from around 1968 to 2004 where Jaguar was too timid to develop and "essentially made the same-looking car." He put this down to a reluctance on Jaguar's part to move too far away from its successful models and, quite interestingly, because "not only did we start doing market research, we started asking Americans what they wanted." CAR tech: how to eliminate turbo lag
Mon, 29 Jul 2013CAR has tested a new breed of experimental super-diesel that literally leaves current technology standing and may banish turbo lag forever. We drove an Audi A6 3.0-litre V6 prototype fitted with an electric bi-turbo system which delivers a massive dose of torque from idle. The effect is radical, firing the saloon off the line like an R8 when the driver floors the throttle.
IIHS names safest cars for 2013
Wed, 02 Jan 2013The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named the safest cars for 2013, including 13 midsize sedans that qualify for a new “top safety pick+” designation. The designation is given to vehicles that earn “good” ratings for occupant protection in at least four of five tests, with no less than “acceptable” in the fifth test. A new test -- the small overlap test -- was added to assess how the vehicles perform during a front-corner collision with another vehicle or object, such as a utility pole.
