Product Description
The Danger of Clouded Plastic Light Covers
Plastic is today's standard automotive construction material used for everything from headlight lenses to motorcycle windshields, plastic tail lights, trailers and more, yet it does have its drawbacks. Although it provides vehicles with lightweight, durable components, it can also yellow and haze with weather, sun and sand after less than ten years of exposure. This can result in both dangerously limited driver visibility on the road, as well as a downgraded appearance and value of the vehicle. While the impact on a vehicle's value varies, the dangers in terms of compromised visibility are clear.
According to recent statistics compiled by the Motor Vehicle Lighting Council, compromised visibility due to dimmed headlights, taillights and other plastic features is a factor in 2.8 million auto accidents, 23,000 fatal crashes and 2,300 pedestrian deaths each year. The AAIA Car Care Council found that 26 percent of the cars it inspected had issues with their lighting system. Millions of cars on the road today have plastic headlight lenses. The problem increases with the age of the lens, and with the average age of cars on the road about 10 years old, the problem is growing. Yet there is something you can do about it - get the 3M 39014 Lens Renewal Kit.
The Do-It-Yourself Solution
The 3M 39014 Lens Renewal Kit is designed to give do-it-yourselfers an easy and affordable way to repair their vehicle's plastic lens surfaces. Containing various graded sanding pads, pad holders, buffing pads, polish, detailed instructions and even 25' of 3M headlight masking tape, it includes everything users need to turn their household drill into a low cost solution to the dangerous automotive problem of dull headlights. The Lens Renewal Kit can also be used to repair hazing on other plastic surfaces, including taillights, emergency light bars, plastic motorcycle lights, trailers, snowmobiles and more. Compared to having headlight lenses commercially repaired for approximately $75-$150 or replaced for up to $1,500, the 3M 39014 Lens Renewal Kit costs a fraction of that price and the entire process takes under an hour, depending on the extent of the damage.
How Does it Work?
The steps for using the 3M 39014 Lens Renewal Kit are easy and can be performed by anyone, usually in less than an hour. First, clean the plastic surface to be worked on and tape around the body panels of your vehicle using the included 3M Premium Masking tape. Second, using your standard household hand drill (1200-1600 rpm) with attached 3M backing plate, sand away the hazed surface in a two-stage sanding process with the included P500 and P800 sanding pads. Third, refine and reduce remaining visible scratches using your drill/3M backing plate and the P3000 Trizact foam disc. Lastly, polish and buff lenses for clarity and shine using your drill/3M backing plate with orange foam compounding pad attached and a small amount of 3M headlight lens polish. That's it - simple, fast and inexpensive. In addition to a standard household drill mentioned (1200-1600 rpm), you will also need a spray bottle and water used in the wet sanding and buffing processes. Otherwise, everything that you need is included in the kit.

Acura RLX Concept
Thu, 05 Apr 2012Acura held the world debut of the Acura RLX Concept at the New York auto show, which indicates the design and engineering direction for Acura's flagship sedan, set to launch at the beginning of 2013. The RLX Concept's design continues the brand's ‘Keen Edge' design philosophy, with bodyside surfacing clearly related to the ILX we first saw in Detroit. The RLX maintaining approximately the same length as the current RL but with a wheelbase increased by 50mm while the front overhang has been reduced by the same amount.
De Tomaso bites the dust – again
Sun, 08 Jul 2012De Tomaso has filed for bankruptcy again after failing to complete any of the deals Gian Mario Rossignolo had claimed would save the brand. De Tomaso has never had a an easy time of things despite building a few cars – well, the De Tomaso Pantera, at least – which had real appeal. After its last bankruptcy, former Fiat executive Gian Mario Rossignolo rode in as a white knight to put De Tomaso back on top – or so we thought.
Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV (PHEV) Paris 2012 debut
Mon, 18 Jun 2012A production version of the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) will debut at the Paris Motor Show in September. Mitsubishi has already had a couple of stabs at a plug-in hybrid Outlander EV, with the PX-MiEV at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2009 and then again with the imaginatively named PX-MiEV II at last year’s Tokyo Show. But now we’re about to get the production version.
