Jaguar XFR (2009) tops 225mph at Bonneville

Running at a secret test at the Bonneville Salt Flats, the one-off prototype, using a tweaked version of Jaguar's new supercharged 5.0-litre V8, topped even the legendary XJ220's 217mph top speed. Honda Small Hybrid Sports Concept

Sitting on a modified Civic platform, the European designed SHSC is powered by 1.4-litre VTEC petrol and electric engines, that will, Honda claims, return 80mpg on the urban cycle, with low emission levels of 120g/km. The teardrop-shaped two-seater also features massive low-resistance 20-inch tyres and a full-length glass roof that flows into its tail.

The Japanese tuning industry may finally be emerging from the economic slump if this year's Tokyo Auto Salon is an accurate barometer.
