Over 1.3 million orders were placed for the 1949 Ford before it even went officially on sale. The revolutionary post-war design with slick slab sides and semi-covered wheels became a symbol of American optimism. "The inspiration for the Forty-Nine concept comes from the passion and excitement of the original, combined with the imagination of people across America who customized the car and turned it into what they thought a really great car should be," said J Mays, Ford's vice president of Design at the unveiling of the retro-futurist coupe back in 2001.

Fiat has issued this Youtube video of its new 500X crossover, which is destined to launch the Italian brand into the compact SUV market dominated by the Nissan Juke. Although an annoyingly restricted view of the 500X, it is possible to make out the silhouette and outline of the baby crossover, which goes on sale in the UK in time for the new 15-reg launch in March 2015. Sir Stirling Moss has been badly hurt falling down a lift shaft at his Mayfair home Sir Stirling Moss – ‘The best driver never to have been world champion’ – has been hurt after falling down the lift shaft at his home in Mayfair. Reports say that Sir Stirling, who turned 80 last year, broke both ankles, several bones in his feet and damaged vertebrae in the fall on Saturday. A hospital spokesman said Sir Stirling was ‘Comfortable’.
