OnStar 'ignition block' disables stolen vehicles
Tue, 21 Jul 2009OnStar, General Motors' in-vehicle safety and communications system, has launched a service to keep car thieves from starting a vehicle that has been reported stolen. As of July 20, three stolen cars had been disabled by the technology, called "remote ignition block." The feature is available on select 2009 and 2010 GM models. Subscribers must report their vehicles stolen to police officials and request assistance from OnStar, which then sends a signal that prevents the car from restarting.

Thu, 25 Sep 2014The Volkswagen Golf Alltrack – a rufty-tufty ‘Crossover’ Golf With the world falling in love with cars that do things they’ll almost never need, car makers are filling more and more niches with new models that have an element of Off Road ability. Step forward the new 2015 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack. Just as they did with the Passat Alltrack, VW has taken the Estate version and made it a bit more butch, in effect turning it in to a sort of ‘Crossover’ Golf with the ability to take on (slightly) more rugged terrain.
Design Contest: Michelin Challenge Design announces 2008 theme and call for entries
Tue, 30 Jan 2007Michelin Challenge Design, one of the world's fastest growing transportation design programs, has announced it will continue its focus on safety in 2008 under the central theme of 'Safety over Size.' The 2008 theme was announced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, where the Michelin Challenge Design exhibit showcased works from vehicle manufacturers, students, as well as the first full-size concept to be submitted by an independent entrant. Rising energy costs, urban congestion and environmental concerns are all contributing to an increased interest in smaller vehicles, but consumers are often hesitant to consider smaller vehicles due to safety concerns that are both real and perceived. Participating designers are encouraged to 'throw away the book' and to present ideas that enhance the real and perceived safety and security of smaller vehicles through design innovations in areas such as accident avoidance, enhanced driver controls, survivability and visibility.
