*FOR NON-TURBO ONLY
*This kit covers years 1988-1996. At least most models in that year range. Most 240's, 740's and 940's. I owned all three models and it fit what I owned.
Flame Trap Kit Master Kit--expensive cross over hose is included. Genuine Volvo
It is for the 4 cylinder 8 valve engine B230F. It is not the right kit for a 6 cylinder (760, 960)or a 4 cylinder with 16 valve dual overhead cam (B234F). This engine was used on some late 940's. It is close, but it is not right. I can help you on those models but you need to let me know your application. There has also been a discrepency on some cars outside the USA . Notably France did not require the same catalytic etc. so...it is close but maybe not exact for a car in France .

This is no longer a new package. I put it together a few years ago. It continues to be one of my best sellers. I had a buyer tell me his mechanic charges $60 to service the flame trap. He is lucky he found a mechanic that knows what the flame trap is! I had a man email me the other day thanking me for my work. His flame trap was plugged solid!
The little hose I send is not cheap vaccum tubing. It is Gates LOLA Industrial hose. This holds up much better on this application than any hose I have found. Also you are getting the improved flame trap insert, the flame trap holder holder (late version is Straight and older version is Bent), a new lower hose, and a new gasket for your oil cap.
This kit covers years 1988-1996. Around 1988, Volvo switched to a straight insert holder from a bent one. NOT FOR TURBO MODELS * see the notes above for a couple of models it will not be exact on!
If you also need the top formed hose (approx 14inch hose) look for my auctions for the Master Flame trap kit which is this kit plus the upper high dollar hose. If you decide later you need this hose, I have it listed as a seperate purchase. Many buyers have told me they did not know that hose was split or soft until they serviced the flame trap system.
I also include a picture or diagram of the breathing system in with the kits I ship plus my instructions which are worth more than the price of the kits.
I have kits for the 81-87 volvos listed. They take different parts, but use the same flame trap.
If you have a pre 81 volvo , it takes a different holder. The insert is the same. These early 240s have the B23 engine instead of the B230F engine which this kit shown fits. I will have those pre-1981 holders on an auction soon. Volvo has led the world in emission projects.
Many Detroit built cars use an air pump to scavenge the crankase. That usually means another belt and a pump to wear and they also plug up. Volvo designed a system with no pump, but we need to maintain it or the crankase pressures rise and seals and gaskets blow out. I do not think Volvo envisioned the cars going 1/2 million miles. The maintenance charts stop shortly after 120K. This item needs more frequent service after 100K than before 100K because the carbon in the old engine is breaking loose and thus plugging the flame trap. Plus, there is more leakage past the pistons and rings which means more gas to scavenge.
Flame Trap Insert
This is a new style flame trap for all non-turbo Volvos. The old style flame trap is made from brass or copper. They plug up much easier than this new plastic style. This Flame Trap Insert (filter) is the little part that causes the oil leaks on your engine. The dirty air coming from your crankcase blow by plumbing passes through this part on it's way to your intake manifold. The carbon flakes in this air gets caught in this little "filter". When this part plugs up, your crankcase pressure goes up too high and you have oil leaking out of your engine in many places. The high crankcase pressure is pushing the oil out of your engine. I have seen oil running up my windshield while on the interstate. It was at that moment that I started doing all my own maintenance. The mechanics were taking my money, but not doing the little things like cleaning the flame trap! I have seen valve cover gaskets pushed out from under the valve cover because the flame trap was plugged. It is common to have oil coming out of the plastic timing belt cover as oil is pushed past the camshaft, intermediate shaft and front crankshaft seals all because this little part is plugged up! The oil will usually come out of the belt cover near the upper third and stream back onto your water pump and valve cover area making it look sometimes like the head gasket is leaking oil! I recommend cleaning this part with brake cleaner until it is clean EVERY oil change. At least once a year, throw it away. It will you save lots of trouble. It is a neglected maintenance item and I do not know why. It is located in a plastic housing. The plastic housing has a rubber hose on top and the bottom. You can not see the bottom hose. The top hose runs from your intake manifold (center of manifold), loops in an arc usuall over the valve cover and goes onto the top of the flame trap housing between the 3rd and 4th fuel injector. The line is about 1 inch in diameter. Use a flashlight and you will see it. Pull the top hose off. Carefully remove the little hose. Now pull the flame trap housing out of the lower hose. No clamps are involved here, just friction fits. Now you can use your wifes steak knife to remove the little flame trap filter out of the plastic housing.
You need to remove the little adapter from the intake manifold that the little hose hooks to and clean out the orifice with small drill bits or piano wire, carb cleaner and then brake cleaner to get all the trapped carbon out of the adapter. If you need more information, ask me. I love to talk about Volvos.
Oil Cap Gasket
This is a rubber gasket for the oil filler cap on most 4 and 5 cylinder engines. B16, B18, B20, B23, B230f, B230T and others. I do not have all my research done. I own a 122, 240, 745, 850, and 940. The gasket fits all those models, even the Turbo's. The local dealer charged me over $5.00 for one of these. This is a neglected wear item. As the gasket wears the cap does not fit tight enough to stop oil seepage. Volvo engines tend to have high crankcase pressure and oil will accumulate around your filler cap if the gasket is worn.

VW Tiguan R-Line Review
Wed, 21 Oct 2009The Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line When VW called and asked us if we’d like a Tiguan R-Line for a few days to see what we thought, we had to ponder on which of us would test it. Unlike many ‘R’ VWs, the Tiguan isn’t endowed with more power. It doesn’t – for example – sport the nice meaty lump from the Golf R or even the mildest of power mods.
Saab (NEVS) loses right to use Saab name – NEVS gets creditor protection
Mon, 01 Sep 2014Saab (NEVS) loses right to use Saab name – NEVS gets creditor protection Just a few weeks ago we reported that Saab and its new owner National Electric Vehicles Sweden (NEVS) were once again up against it with an unpaid supplier filing for bankruptcy. Since the, Saab has been thrown a lifeline by the Swedish courts, and a big kick in the teeth by Saab AB. NEVS right to use the Saab name (although not the Griffin logo) was granted by the owners – the defence firm Saab AB – but in light of NEVS financial predicament that right has been withdrawn.
New Nissan Murano SUV revealed – but is it coming to the UK?
Mon, 14 Apr 2014The 2015 Nissan Murano (pictured) debuts in New York The new Nissan Murano was teased a few weeks ago by Nissan and now, ahead of its public debut at the New York Auto Show, Nissan has revealed the new Murano properly. With a striking similarity to the Nissan Resonance SUV concept we saw in Detroit in 2013, the new Murano get boomerang headlights and a floating roof, a big chrome grill, rounded wheel arches and a rising waistline that makes it look more purposeful. Inside, the new Murano is more appealing and upmarket with a lower instrument panel with 7″ Drive Assist Display, fewer buttons, Climate, heated steering wheel, electric folding back seats and a lounge feel.
