-- MAD DOG IV may try for record --
Art Malone, 25yr. old drag racer from Tampa, Fla. shown here in cockpit of MAD DOG IV talking with Bob Osiecki, car owner from Charlotte N.C. may try for the $10,000 prize, posted by Bill France, Pres. of Daytona Inter. Speedway for the first driver to hit 180MPH.

Bill France posted an award of $10,000 to anyone who could post a speed in excess of 180 mph on a closed course speedway. Bob Osiecki of Charlotte, NC took up the challenge. Osiecki installed a super charger Dodge 413 cubic-inch engine in an Indy roadster. Then he designed and installed a vertical stabilizer and a pair of inverted air foils, or upside down wings, to the chassis to aerodynamically stabilize the vehicle at speed.

On August 28, 1961 Art Malone drove the 'Mad Dog IV' to a world record speed of 181.561 mph at Daytona International Speedway.

The body is constructed from aluminum and powered by a Chrysler 413 460-cubic-inch engine. There are drum brakes and Firestone tires.

Read on for our handy guide to how to spot the new 2010 X5 and what is new under the metal. How will I tell the new 2010 X5 apart from the old one?The headlamps on the X5 are new, the foglights move, air vents swell like a panting athlete's nostrils and the front bumpers have more body colour and fins in matt aluminium trim.Out back, new rear lights have BMW's now-trademark LED lighting bars emphasising horizontal lines of the X5. A range of SUV-atypical 19in and 20in wheels provide a planted stance for Chelsea, if not China. What's new under the bonnet of the facelifted X5?Eight-speed ZF automatic boxes are now standard across the board; their spread across the BMW range is endemic, in the quest for lower CO2 and higher mpg.

Modified Mercedes turned to gold

Mon, 10 Mar 2014

GERMAN tuning firms are known for occasionally crossing the barriers of taste, but this latest offering from Carlsson appears to have gone into new territory. Called the CS50 Versailles – after the Palace of Versailles that King Louis XIV turned into a opulent chateau – it’s based on the latest generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which is hardly a car short on luxury. But that hasn’t stopped Carlsson turning it into an automotive homage to gold.
