VW will build small run of XL1 plug-in hybrid

Volkswagen will begin production of its XL1 plug-in hybrid in two years. "We want to go into series production with this car starting in 2013," VW chairman Ferdinand Piech told Automotive News Europe on Tuesday at an event in Doha, Qatar, ahead of the 2011 Qatar auto show where VW unveiled an XL1 prototype. Maserati announced ambitious growth plans on Thursday to dramatically increase global production to 50,000 units by 2015. By comparison, Maserati delivered 6,159 units in 2011, an increase of 8.5 percent compared with the previous year. More than 2,700 of those were versions of the GranTurismo.

The so-called small overlap test involves crashing the front corner of a car into a barrier at 40 mph. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety devised the test to simulate a collision with a stationary object such as a tree or a utility pole.
