BMW & Toyota agree joint development of new sports car
Thu, 24 Jan 2013BMW and Toyota have signed a binding agreement to co-develop a new sports car and continue with co-developed and shared technology. The way forward for car makers seems to be either to be as big as possible for the benefits of economy of scale, or to work together on joint products to cut development costs. Which is why BMW and Toyota are getting cosy.

Subaru has come up with a deal for the Impreza WRX Turbo where you can have the car for the same price as the 1994 equivalent – just £17,798. Those are figures on a par with today’s Polo Bluemotion, but this concept will become production reality in mid-2009. A 1.6-litre common-rail diesel engine powers the new Golf Bluemotion, producing 104bhp and 184lb ft, but those remarkable figures are helped by revised ratios on the five-speed ‘box, optimised aerodynamics and low rolling resistance tyres. There’s also a particulate filter to keep the exhaust gases clean.
