The company was founded in 1997 when it began developing and manufacturing air intake systems for light trucks and SUVs, utilizing the cotton-gauze filter technology that was available at the time. The original AIRAID Intake System combined an open-element filter with an intake tube to make an easy-to install air intake kit that dramatically increased air flow, improved performance and generated more horsepower and torque. AIRAID Premium Filters consist of multiple layers of cotton-gauze plus one layer of synthetic fiber material called SynthaFlow, sandwiched between either stainless steel or aluminum mesh, depending upon the application. Land Rover confirms end of Defender production

It's been all but a foregone conclusion for some time now, but Land Rover has confirmed to our sister publication Automotive News Europe that the aging Defender won't live to see 2020. Originally conceived as an agricultural machine, the first Land Rover prototype used scavenged Willys Jeep bits left over from World War II. American kids of a certain age may have been captivated by the Land Rover's mystique while watching Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom back in the '70s.

IndyCar Hot Wheels race into stores

IndyCar-themed Hot Wheels will be hitting stores this month. The Indy Racing League and Mattel Inc., the maker of Hot Wheels, have agreed on a four-year deal that will produce a lineup of toy cars featuring teams and drivers. A 1:64-scale Hot Wheel is $4.99, with a 1:24 version that costs $24.99.
