Toyota RAV4 EV - Not for Sale
Note: Update to this story at the end. When we reported back in 2010 that there were plans afoot for an electric Toyota RAV4 (and a Lexus RX EV too, for that matter) it made sense. Toyota had just spent £35 million on a pile of Tesla shares, and done a deal for Tesla to use an old Toyota plant in Fremont which was about fifty times the size Tesla could ever need.
The Chinese auto industry might not be the most important in the world yet, but it’s getting there. It’s already the top market for a large number of top-tier brands like Mercedes-Benz, and the industry has progressed to the point where companies including Nissan are setting up brands specifically to cater to the needs of Chinese buyers. But as far as Chinese brands go, things are very much a work in progress.
Porsche and Volkswagen have broadly agreed on sale terms, and the name Auto Union may be resurrected, Reuters reports. The new entity could be led by Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn, and Porsche would retain some independence--similar to Audi's setup within the Volkswagen Group. Porsche would be the 10th brand in the company.
