Flying the United States National Flag Ensign

  • The U.S. Flag ensign is proper for all U.S. yachts, without reservation
  • This is "Old Glory", with (50) stars and (13) stripes
  • All boats, when at anchor, fly it from the stern staff, if so equipped, only while occupied
  • It is flown from the stern staff of powerboats underway on inland waters
    • If the powerboat has a mast and gaff, the proper display is at the gaff
    • On a Sportsfisherman, where a stern staff would be in the way of the action, the practice is to fly the ensign from a halyard rigged just behind the tuna tower
  • The ensign should be flown from the stern staff of all sailboats when under power alone, or at anchor or made fast
    • On Marconi-rigged sailboats under sail alone, the practice for many years had been to fly the ensign from the leech of the aftermost sail, approximately 2/3 the length of the leech above the clew
    • This puts it in about the same position it would occupy if the boat were gaff-rigged, and on gaff-rigged sailboats it is proper to fly the ensign from the peak of the aftermost gaff
    • The advent of the modern high-aspect-ratio rig, with the boom end well inboard of the stern, has made it is possible to fly the ensign from the stern staff of a sailboat underway, and this is now an accepted practice
    • The ensign should be flown from the stern staff of all sailboats
    • If an overhanging boom requires that the staff be off center, it should preferably be on the starboard side

Jaguar XE Estate & Coupe “…a very difficult business case”

Mon, 13 Oct 2014

It’ll be tough to extend the Jaguar XE Range in to an Estate & Coupe We’ve banged on for years about Jaguar extending their saloon car range (well, the XJ and XF as that’s all they had until the XE arrived) to coupes and estates, at the very least. We know, for example, that the Jaguar XJ Coupe has been on the drawing board for as long as the current XJ, but Jaguar has failed to build it. Similarly, there have been rumblings about an XF Coupe for years, but that has come to nought too, although Jaguar did finally manage to launch the XF Sportbrake Estate to extend the XF range a little.

Passengers are the biggest distraction

Tue, 29 Jul 2014

THE BIGGEST DISTRACTION for drivers is other people in the car. Adult passengers are the most distracting, with 18% of drivers saying they have had a near miss or crashed because of their attention being drawn away by someone else in the car. A survey by the AA found adjusting the radio was the second biggest distraction, with 16% of drivers admitting they had narrowly avoided a collision or been in a crash while fiddling with the radio.

Nissan might delay U.S. EV output

Mon, 20 Jun 2011

Japan's earthquake and tsunami may force Nissan to delay the start of U.S. production of its Leaf electric vehicle, now scheduled for late 2012. "The earthquake is putting us in a very difficult situation," said Hideaki Watanabe, head of Nissan's Global Zero Emission Vehicle Business Unit.
