Mercedes-Benz courts Renault for new Smart model based on Twingo

Mercedes-Benz is set to join forces with Renault in a deal aimed at providing its underdeveloped Smart division with a contemporary-engineered front-engine/front-wheel-drive platform as the basis for a frugal new Forfour model. The new Smart, due out in 2013, is planned to sit on a lightly modified version of the Renault Twingo’s underpinnings, complete with a 93.3-inch wheelbase. Volkswagen T-ROC concept debuts at Geneva Motor show

As promised, Volkswagen brought the pint-sized T-ROC concept to the Geneva Motor Show this week. Intended to be positioned below the Taigun compact SUV (not to be confused with the Tiguan) the T-ROC sits on the Golf platform known internally as MQB. But the T-ROC is actually shorter than the Golf, at 164.5 inches in length, owing to short overhangs.

Classic BMW takes Best of Show at Hilton Head Island Concours d'Elegance

A 1937 BMW 328 Roadster owned by Lothar Schuettler of Darnestown, Md., took Best of Show honors at the Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival & Concours d'Elegance. The Sunday concours, which had BMW as the honored marque, wrapped up a weeklong event that included the Savannah Speed Classic vintage races in nearby Savannah, Ga., a tour around Hilton Head by concours entrants, a Motoring Midway and a Car Club Jamboree on Saturday featuring exhibits from car clubs from around the country. The 328 Roadster was first owned by German race driver Baron Fritz Huschke von Hanstein and is one of only 18 cars that were painted black that year.
