Concept Car of the Week: Italdesign Machimoto (1986)

The Machimoto might look and sound like a Japanese concept, but it was developed in Europe in the Turin-based Italdesign studio, and was based on a Volkswagen Golf GTI platform. The name actually derives from MACHIna (car in Italian) and MOTOciclo (motorcycle) as the perfect hybrid between the worlds of two- and four-wheelers. Unveiled on its home turf at the Turin motor show in 1986, it landed like a UFO, shocking both the public and the press.

India's Tata Motors, which bought Jaguar from Ford Motor Co. two years ago, recently approved a product plan that gives Jaguar three new models: a small sports car, an entry-level sedan and a station wagon. They will be the first new vehicles to be fully developed under Tata, but they are all several years away.

The Magna Steyr Aero light is the fifth concept car from the subsidiary of automotive supplier Magna. The Aerolight is an A segment car, that tips the scale at just 700kg. Powered by a CNG natural gas drive system, the Aerolight has CO2 emissions of just 55g/km.
