2009 SSC Ultimate Aero

The SSC Ultimate Aero, made by Shelby Super Cars in the USA, is an astonishing car. In current guise it puts out 1183bhp and has a top speed higher than the Bugatti Veyron. In fact, it holds the record for the fastest production car in the world. But that doesn’t mean the guys at SSC are resting on their laurels. They’ve just announced upgrades for the 2009 car.

The measly 1183bhp is upped to an unbelievable 1287bhp, achieved by a more structurally stiff block and better oil flow. In addition, the SSC manages to get an increase of 20% in the air-flow, due to a redesigned nose and some carbon fibre louvres. Impressive stuff. Remarkably, the top speed increases to a mind-blowing 270mph.

All that power needs a good set of brakes, and SSC has introduced Aerobrake on the SSC, which deploys a spoiler at the back by up to 8″ to give air braking when the brake pedal is depressed. Cleverly, it deploys relative to the brake pedal pressure applied. Always helps to be able to stop.

SSC have also had a fiddle with the interior as well, adding the ubiquitous chunks of carbon fibre, and a high-end ‘Infotainment’ centre.

Astonishing though the Ultimate SSC Aero is, it’s no Bugatti Veyron. It is, however, a cleverly conceived car, built to grab the headlines with its enormous power output and headline top speed. But, despite this, it is not the same sort of technical tour de force as the Veyron. It is in fact the ultimate American Muscle Car. Lots of brute force and a soupcon of ignorance. But that’s its charm. It is not a pretentious car. It does what it says on the box – in spades.
