2012 Ford Mondeo Titanium - the quickest ever Mondeo

If you want an illustration of how quickly things are changing in the car world when it comes to the relationship between power and economy, you could do worse than look at the 2012 Ford Mondeo Titanium.

The new Mondeo Titanium and Titanium S offer two options of power from their 2.0 litre Ecoboost lump, either a 200bhp version or a 237bhp one. And with a manual ‘box the 237bhp version becomes the fastest Mondeo Ford has ever built.

Which is not really something you’d expect from a 2.0 litre Mondeo. True, it’s not blisteringly quick, but it can get to 62mph in 7.3 seconds and top out at 155mph. Which is not to shoddy and is quicker than the last quick Mondeo – the ST220 – which had to come equipped with a 3.0 litre V6 to pick up its skirts and hustle.

But the key to the change to the latest Ecoboost 2.0 litre to make the Mondeo hustle is the huge improvement in economy and emissions – at least when you’re not scooting along to your next meeting.

Equipped with the new six-speed manual box, the 237bhp Mondeo will average 37.1mpg – an improvement of 30 per cent over the old ST220 – and emissions drop from 249g/km with the ST220 to 176g/km for the new 2.0-litre EcoBoost.

Interestingly, both emissions and economy are the same if you opt for the less powerful 200bhp Mondeo, with the only real difference being a 0-62mph time that’s 0.3 seconds slower.

The new Ecoboost with six-speed manual is available in either Mondeo Titanium or Titanium S and will start to roll out in October. But for some reason Ford are only going to make the new fast Mondeo available in Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland for now, although it’s likely the UK will get the option in early 2012.

It would seem that reps getting to meetings on time is more important in Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland than in the rest of Europe.
