2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 revealed

Petrolheads on this side of the Pond know what a Mustang is, even if we don’t exactly covet it. But it’s one thing not really coveting a 2011 V6 Mustang – even if it is much improved on the last version – but it’s quite another to ignore the ‘Super’ Mustang know as the Boss.
Ford has announced the Ford Mustang Boss 302 for 2012, and they’re claiming they’ve used the M3 as a benchmark for handling. Ford also says the Boss 302 will beat the M3 round the Laguna Sec track. Quite some claim. But the specs look decent, if not exactly astonishing.
The Boss 302 gets an upgraded clutch, adjustable suspension, better brakes and the standard 5.0-litre V8 gets a tweak to produce 440 horses and 380 lb/ft torque. In the looks department the 2012 Boss gets inspiration from the original ’69 Mustang with a white roof and C-Stripe plus a front splitter and rear spoiler.
Inside you’ll get a dark metallic finish for the instrument panel, Alcantara on the steering wheel and a set of Recaros (optional). Because it seems that the Boss 302 has to be loud, Ford has stripped out 11lbs of sound deadening to make the cabin louder. Whatever floats your boat, I suppose.
There’s also a new colour palette available for the Boss 302 with Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat Metallic, Performance White, Race Red and Competition Orange on offer. It also looks like there’s going to be a ‘Boss’ Boss 302 with Ford churning out a Limited Edition Boss 302 Laguna Seca.
It’s pretty unlikely this range-topping Mustang will get to the UK, but if it really does have the measure of the M3 it will be an interesting prospect.
