Acura gave us the full rundown of the 2014 MDX SUV on Wednesday. The seven-passenger people-mover goes on sale tomorrow, and for the first time includes a base front-wheel-drive version which stickers at $43,185.
The Acura MDX has a new platform for 2014 that's lower and narrower, but with a 2.8-inch longer wheelbase. The SUV is stiffer than its predecessor, as well as 275 pounds lighter. A redesigned MacPherson strut setup controls the front while the rear has a multilink system. The MDX moves into the electric power steering realm, with the weight adjustable via the standard Integrated Dynamics System. IDS allows drivers to switch between comfort, normal and sport driving.
The only powertrain for 2014 consists of a 3.5-liter V6 making 290 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The V6 is part of the company's Earth Dreams group of engines and is capable of switching between three- and six-cylinder modes to save more fuel. Torque is up from the previous 3.7-liter V6, while fuel consumption is down. The two-wheel drive MDX is rated at 20 mpg city/28 highway, while the SH AWD model comes in at 18/27.
The base price for the front drive MDX is $43,185, including an $895 destination charge. The most expensive trim -- with all-wheel drive and the Technology Package -- comes in at $49,460.
Standard features include leather seats with a heated front row, Smart Entry with Push Button Start, a 432-watt audio system with eight speakers, 18-inch alloy wheels, Jewel Eye LED headlights and more. The Tech package adds navigation, an upgraded stereo, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning and blind spot indicators. The Advance package upgrades the radio again, adds more safety features, bigger wheels and an upscale interior.
Inside, the 2014 Acura MDX features a reclining, sliding second row of seats, improved access to the third row, and a lower step-in height. Cabin quietness has been improved with thicker glass and more sound-deadening material. Console storage also has been increased; the main compartment now can hold a tablet computer, purse or similar-sized object.
The MDX will do battle in the competitive entry luxury SUV segment that features the Lexus RX, BMW X3 and Volvo XC60. Like the MDX, all three start around $40,000.
