2014 Honda CR-Z starts at $20,785

The 2014 Honda CR-Z goes on sale Oct. 8 with a base price of $20,785, including destination. That's a $20 premium over last year's car.

The entry-level hatchback gets a six-speed manual, Bluetooth, rearview camera, USB input, power windows, power locks and keyless entry. The EX model comes with an upgraded stereo, subwoofer, leather steering wheel and a few other bits. Navigation is optional.

With all the boxes checked, a CR-Z EX with CVT and navigation will cost $24,780.

Power for all models comes from the same SOHC 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine as last year with Honda's Integrated Motor Assist. The 15-kW motor, which uses a 144-volt lithium-ion battery to store energy -- can assist in acceleration or act as a generator during braking and coasting. Combined output is 130 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque. Power is slightly down on CVT-equipped models. Like last year, the CR-Z gets sport, econ and normal modes.

As for the suspension, the CR-Z gets a MacPherson setup up front and retains the torsion beam rear, one of the biggest complaints from the Honda faithful. All CR-Zs come standard with 16-inch wheels; 17s are optional.

Safety features include Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure, dual-stage airbags, tire-pressure monitoring and a few other safety systems.
