The Mazda MX-5 has been a huge success for Mazda over the last 25 years, selling almost 950,000 since the fun little Roadster was first launched in 1989. And now it’s time for the 2015 Mazda MX-5. Mazda has announced that the new MX-5 will debut across the globe on September 3rd 2014 at simultaneous events in Spain, Japan and the US ahead of the new MX-5 heading for the Frankfurt Motor Show and a full public debut.
Mazda are using the events to celebrate 25 years of the MX-5 as well as debuting the new MX-5, but despite the high profile reveal we still don’t know too much about the next generation MX-5.
Mazda did take a bare chassis from the new MX-5 to the New York Auto Show in April – a chassis that will be shared with the new Alfa Romeo Spider – so we know the new MX-5 will have its engine behind the front axle and closer to the car’s centre and that it will stay rear wheel drive.
But apart from that – and the certainty the MX05 will still be relatively simple, affordable and fun, we don’t know a lot more.
Jeff Guyton, Mazda’s European CEO, said:
The MX-5 is the product that best epitomises Mazda’s convention-defying spirit and our love of driving.
It has been grabbing people’s attention for 25 years, and with the new-generation model we’re aiming to share this passion with yet another generation of drivers.
We’ll find out more on 3rd September in Spain – if not before.
