Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix Yas Marina – The Track +video
Fri, 23 Oct 2009Yas Marina F1 Circuit Abu Dhabi
All the real meat has now gone from the Formula 1 season after Jenson Button won the world championship in Brazil last Sunday. But there is one more treat left for F1 fans – and drivers – in this year’s season, and that’s the inaugural race at the new Yas Marina track in Abu Dhabi.
The Yas Marina track on Yas Island is a towering monument to the creativity – and financial muscle – of the UAE. Purpose built and rising out of the desert like a shimmering monument to the shrine of motorsport, it will offer fans and drivers a first – the first F1 Grand Prix to start in daylight and end in the dark. The F1 track is 5.5km long and 50,000 spectators can be accommodated in covered grandstands. And there’ll be fun for all with events for kids and adults, including concerts over the race weekend by Beyonce, Jamiroquai (good way for JK to get a petrol fix and get paid), Kings of Leon and Aerosmith.
But the weekend is about the F1 Grand Prix. What should we expect to see from this untried circuit? Well, you can be sure it will be nothing like the old tracks. Whether that’s good or bad rather depends on your view of the sport. But it will certainly be a spectacle for both drivers and fans.
We’ll find out next weekend.
The video below is the first of a lap of the new F1 circuit.
