Audi A1 – the tease begins + video
Tue, 15 Dec 2009Audi have started the tease for the A1
We’ve known the Audi A1 has been coming for years. For goodness sakes, we’ve seen two concepts for it and had the head of Audi’s production plant in Belgium saying (wrongly, as it turned out) that production of the Audi A1 would start in October 2009. But that’s not going to stop Audi playing at ‘Tease’, so with production of the A1 now scheduled to start in early 2010 they’ve started to tease the new MINI-competing Audi.
Audi are kicking off with a graffiti artist video, with said artist portraying the new A1 and the usual bunch of talking heads teasing us about what is in store – and the ‘Journey’.
Expected to be based on the latest VW Polo underpinings, the Audi A1 will be longer and wider than the MINI and come with a selection of four-pot engines, including the 1.2 and 1.4 litre TFSI lumps. It also seems likely we will get the three door hatchback first with the five door following later.
Audi are unlikely to miss out on the soft top market, so expect an A1 convertible at some time in the next eighteen months. And we already know there will be an Audi S1 – with around 180bhp and all wheel drive – after Audi’s design director admiited that the super-mini was in the pipeline.
There will no doubt be lots more to come before the new A1 gets its reveal at the Geneva Motor Show early in 2010.
