Audi A2 planned for 2013
Mon, 08 Mar 2010The original Audi A2. Audi are planning a new A2 for 2013 based on the A1
Well you didn’t really think that the kings of the car-niche would ignore the number 2 for ever did you? Despite the less than universal praise the original Audi A2 attracted (and, by Audi’s standards, miserable sales volume) they were always going to slip an A2 in to the mix somewhere. And it looks like they may have decided where.
The first official confirmation that an A2 is in the works is a quote by Audi’s CEO Rupert Stadler, speaking at the Geneva Motor Show last week. He said that “…there’s clearly room for another product and another concept between the A3 and A1″. And we assume he was talking in a sense other than the mathematical one.
Early indications are that a new Audi A2 will be based on the A1′s platform and probably come as an e-tron of some description, although we doubt very much that will be the only powertrain on offer. But with a three and five door A1 already in the mix, what could Audi do with an A2 to differentiate it from the A1 and the A3? Your guess is probably as good as ours, but it seems a fair bet that we will either see some sort of mini-mpv/crossover or a stretched Sportback version of the A1.
Whatever it is, it will be a year or two before we see anything. But we doubt Audi will make the mistake of making it so light that the whole car rocks when the wipers are on. Which is exactly what used to happen with the original Audi A2.
