BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe in the flesh: Geneva Motor Show
Fri, 07 Mar 2014The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe lands in Geneva
The big news from BMW at the Geneva Motor Show has been the arrival of the production version of the new X4, rather overshadowing the European debut of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. Which is a shame. It’s a shame because the 4 Series Gran Coupe is a very good looking car – as is its big brother, the 6 Series Gran Coupe – even if we struggle to see how BMW are going to manage to differentiate it sufficiently from the new 3 Series saloon.
The new 4 Series Coupe is effectively the new 3 Series with a coupe body, and the 4 Series Gran Coupe is a four door 4 Series Coupe – which seems to be a circle.
But the 4 Series Gran Coupe is different to the 3 Series saloon.
It has a swoopier profile with a smaller glasshouse, a set of smaller, and frameless, back doors and is longer and lower than the 3 Series saloon.
But those differences actually make it look better whilst, in everyday use, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is just as practical a proposition as the 3 Series saloon.
Where BMW are differentiating the 4 Series Gran Coupe is on price – although the Gran Coupe costs the same as the 2-door Coupe – with the entry-level 418d Gran Coupe costing £30,995 whilst the entry-level 3 Series 318d SE costs £27,675.
But for our money the extra style the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe offers makes the extra cost worthwhile, especially when you’re considering a Gran Coupe at the top of the range, like the £41,155 435i Gran Coupe.
Still, it’s all about choice, but we’d opt for the 4 Series Gran Coupe over the 3 Series saloon every time.
