BMW X5 (F15)
Fri, 31 May 2013This is the new, third generation BMW X5, the biggest-selling SUV in its segment with over 1.3 million sold since the first was launched in 1999.
While the previous versions have sat more in the high-riding wagon space (BMW prefers to call them Sports Activity Vehicles), this latest F15 model appears to have shifted closer to a more traditional SUV, appearing taller and less ‘squat', certainly than the car it replaces. This is partly due to the DLO, which dips down behind the A-pillar, creating a deep window. This also creates a diving belt line, something new to the model, but similar to the X3. It is 28mm longer, 5mm wider and, despite appearances, 14mm lower at 4,886mm, 1,938mm and 1,762mm respectively with a wheelbase of 2,933mm. Its Cd is an impressive (relatively) 0.31 thanks to such devices as the air curtains around the front wheels, which exit through the vents on the lower fender (as on the 3GT), and the ‘aero blades', which extend the rear bodywork between the tailgate and upper spoiler.
In line with other recent BMWs its lamps meet the enlarged grille, while the whole car appears to have entered a game of 'count the surface changes' with Mercedes, with countless flicks, lines and creases.
Its interior follows the familiar BMW themes, but adds some unusual split-level air vents, the option of individual rear seats – presumably with an eye on the Chinese market – or a pair of third-row perches.
The X5 will make its official debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
