BMW Z2 at Geneva

The idea of a sub-Z4 roadster from BMW has been a round a while. Well, at least as long as the Z4 has. And while we have no idea if it will be called the Z2, it does seem logical.
Finally, it seems clear that the BMW Z2 – or whatever you would like to think of it as – will be making an appearance at Geneva in a couple of weeks. But why now, after speculation for years?
The down-sizing going on all around the car industry (except China) means BMW can now produce a small roadster without any real perception of them selling out. Not only that, but it seems clear VW will be popping up with a version or three of their BlueSport Roadster sometime very soon (Porsche Bluesport? Audi Bluesport? Skoda Bluesport? Take your pick).
But what – apart from a smaller size – will the BMW Z2 bring to the party? Well, for one thing the Geneva Z2 will be a concept with all the flights of fancy concepts can often display. Expect design cues from BMW’s history to be on display together with exotic materials and unfeasible structures.
But be in no doubt, this BMW Z2 will – once suitably toned down – turn in to a production car sooner rather than later. And the two biggest questions for the production Z2 is where it’s going to be pitched. Will it be running RWD and some lively lumps, or will it be part of the Project-i and come with a FWD platform and smaller engines?
We’ll find out soon enough.
