BMW experiments with laser headlamps
Fri, 02 Sep 2011
Headlamp technology is rapidly advancing, and as LED lights become commonplace, many wonder what's next.
BMW suggests lasers, which could offer new safety and function.
Compared with today's LED headlamps, BMW's laser-cut lights have intensity a thousand times greater than that of LEDs while consuming about half the energy.
Though the intensity is much brighter, the light poses no risk to humans, animals or wildlife when used in car lighting, BMW says.
The light will not be emitted directly but go through a conversion to make it benign. The resulting light would appear bright and white in color.
BMW will use the new technology on its i8 concept, a part of the premium concept line aimed at sustainability. The BMW i8 will make its first public appearance at the Frankfurt auto show later this month.
