BMW i8: Mission Impossible

Marketing new cars doesn’t have to mean an ‘in your face advertising’, berating you with benefits and a call to action. It can be more subtle; simply raising awareness or putting the cars in a high-profile role in a popular film or TV show.
Just like Aston Martin with James Bond (and Jaguar Land Rover in the new Bond, too) and Volvo with the Twilight franchise, BMW has placed its product in the new Tom Cruise outing – Mission Impossible 4 | Ghost Protocol.
Shot in the studio and in the UK and Dubai, Mission Impossible 4 is the usual mix of explosions, chases, tenuous plots and great cinematography – not to mention the dark arts of CGI – we’ve come to expect.
But it’s cars we’re here to talk about, and BMW’s latest – and yet to come cars – at that. So Mission Impossible 4 gets a BMW i8 to play with – or, to be fair, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics on which it’s based – which makes a highly appropriate mode of transport for our action hero.
Also in the mix is the new BMW 6 Series Coupe, so BMW get a nice bite of the publicity cherry for the latest road car and what is perhaps the most anticipated car from BMW in a long time.
We have no idea what BMW put under the bonnet fo the i8/Vision ED for Mission Impossible to play with, but there’s a pretty good chance it wasn’t some high-tech hybrid lump. Much more likely they planted a far more practical big V8 with rear wheel drive to play with.
But whatever is under the bonnet, it’s all about showcasing BMW cars.
