Bentley Continental Supersports Ice Speed Record – The Video
Wed, 16 Feb 2011The Bentley Continental Supersports Ice Record - Video below
Yesterday we reported that Rally Champion Juha Kankkunen had – for the second time – taken a Bentley Continental to a new world speed record – on ice.
As always, we had a picture to go with the story. But a picture can only say so much. There’s no real sense of how desolate the frozen seascape is; how awesome the achievement to drive a Bentley Supersports on a frozen sea at 205mph.
So when we got a video in from Bentley this morning chronicling the record, we thought you’d probably want to take a look. We know we did.
We get the usual stuff at the start; lots of faces and a close-up or three of the badges that matter in a corporate world – Bentley and Breitling.
We also get a famous face (well, one that’s probably better known than Juha Kankkunen) in Derek Bell, a driver very familiar with all things Bentley, and a man who drove the Goodwood Hillclimb in a Bentley Continental Supersports in 2009.
But it’s the frozen seascape and the Bentley that capture the imagination. The insignificant Bentley as contrast to the frozen wasteland. A frozen wasteland that looks as if an ice god had breathed on the Baltic and frozen waves as they formed. It gives perspective to the achievement.
And it’s a reminder of how insignificant man’s achievements are in comparison to a natural power than can turn an ever-moving sea in to an ice sculpture.
